Skydeck Blog: Do Consumers Care about Open Access?

  • Sean · 1 year ago
    Hey Jason,

I agree with your analysis of the article, but your prediction for 2008 is predicated on the fact that consumers understand what "open access" really means. As you point out, they understand some of the benefits but can't really envision an entirely open world due to the indoctrination of the carriers.

It will be interesting if the general public realizes that many of the barriers in mobile are artificial constructs of the carriers and not technological limits.

Reminds me of how the cable TV companies seem to say "our studies show that users don't want to be able to buy things a la carte, they actually want to get all those channels they don't want to ever watch. and, honest, even if they wanted a la carte the economics wouldn't work out. trust us." Which in some ways I can maybe sorta believe (like, the Stanford shopping center i think does some slush fundy stuff so that less-frequented shops can still exist there), but in lots of ways I can't - I really don't care about / don't want a lot of channels in the cable package.
